Governor Mike Parson signs a bill into law Saturday designed to help property owners including farmers in situations of eminent domain.
According to a post on the governor's twitter account, House Bill 2005 provides fair protections for "farm families, tightens the use of eminent domain, and ensures the interests of Missouri farmers are always considered and balanced with the public good."
According to a recap of the bill by the Associated Press, the new law deals with the acquisition of private land for public projects for things like highway and utility construction.
This measure puts a standard of at least 150% of market value farm owners must be paid if property is taken through eminent domain. In the case of energy companies, the law would require a percentage of the energy produced to be available to Missouri customers.
The governor signed the law Saturday during a meeting of Missouri Cattle Farmers in Sedalia.
