The Missouri Department of Conservation continues efforts to contain the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease in deer.
Chris Boyd, one of the Taney County Agents for the Missouri Department of Conservation, says during a recent "At Your Service" Podcast that there have been increases in the disease on the deer population in southern Missouri due to migrations of Deer from Arkansas where CWD as been an issue for several years. Boyd say that though the percentage of deer detected with the disease is less than 1%, that the trend is moving upward and the department is trying to reverse the trend.
Boyd says that the department works with land owners to harvest more deer in the hot zone to do more testing. If a deer harvested during this time does not have CWD, that meat is donated to the "Share the Harvest" program that provides meat to area food pantries. Boyd also says that the extra harvesting of deer is not severely impacting the deer numbers that are still very high in the Lakes Region.
