HARRISON, Ark. — Michael and Ruth Crouch are preparing for the upcoming community performance of Handel’s Messiah, scheduled for Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Harrison.
The couple appeared on KHOZ’s “Around The Table” on Wednesday to discuss the annual production. Michael serves as director of the performance, having sung in it for one year before taking on the directing role. He has now led the work for three to four years, with the Harrison Community Choir set to bring the piece to the stage. Ruth will accompany the choir.
Crouch said his goal each year is to understand the work “deeper and better.” He added that music strengthens relationships and that Messiah offers performers and listeners continual opportunities for growth.
The director said that there’s not a time that one can’t grow in "Messiah" and noted the piece is nearly 300 years old. Originally performed during the Easter season, the work tells the full story of Christ. Crouch said Handel wrote it as a “celebration” of fulfilled prophecy.
He also echoed George Frideric Handel’s desire that the oratorio would do more than entertain. Handel expressed hope that it would draw audiences to see Christ’s glory.
