Documents are filed in Boone County Circuit Court this week that details the circumstances that led to the arrest of three people including County Judge Robert Hathaway.
The documents were filed by the Arkansas State Police on Monday detail the investigation that started last summer when Prosecuting Attorney David Ethredge requested a State Police investigation into alleged stolen funds from Boone County Government Accounts. The investigation was centered around 44-year-old Daniel Bolen of Harrison, who had served in several capacities in Boone County Government. Investigation and interview with Bolen and witnesses indicated he had stolen thousands of dollars from departments he worked with including the Coroner's Office as well as his time as the county's 9-1-1 Coordinator.
Bolen is facing four felony charges as a result of the investigation while Hathaway's charges stem from having knowledge of the stealing but not reporting it as required by law. The third person arrested, April Benefiel, is the former Program Director for Grandma's House Children's Advocacy Center. Documents indicate Benefiel was having an affair with Bolen and that he granted her daughter extra hours when working at the 9-1-1 Call Center. Belefiel is alleged to have told Bolen to destroy his phone to cover up evidence.
Benefiel and Hathaway each have appearances scheduled in Boone County Circuit Court next Monday March 9 while Bolen is scheduled for an appearance in Marion County Circuit Court on March 20
