The Executive Director of the Missouri Municipal League appeared before the Branson Board of Aldermen to present information on Charter Cities.
Richard Sheets spoke to the Board during their Tuesday Study Session about the classification that allows cities to write a charter to govern themselves instead of going by the guidelines laid out for either Third or Fourth Class Cities in the state.
Sheets says that the current form of government may not change that much but it would give the city more flexibility with certain aspects of government and also more power for citizens through petition initiatives. Branson Mayor Larry Milton said in an earlier press release from the city and restated at Tuesday's meeting that the ability for citizens to be more directly involved was one of the reasons he wanted to look into the Charter City form of government.
Sheets said the measure would have to be in two phases, one a vote by the people to elect a commission to put the charter together and the other to approve the charter itself the following year.
