Improvements Coming to Gainesville Water, Sewer Systems

The Ozark County Seat will see improvements coming to certain infrastructure.

The story below is from the Ozark County Times and KTLO:

Improvements to the city of Gainesville’s water and sewer systems are in the plans thanks to large grants the city recently received. The city will get just over $4.2 million for drinking water improvements and $1.4 million for improvements to the wastewater system. The city applied for the grants through the Department of Natural Resources ARPA program.

According to the Ozark County Times, the biggest project the city wants to work on is to connect the water supply on the west side of Gainesville to the city’s center district so they have a back-up water supply.

The west well was struck by lightning in the fall of 2021, leaving that section of town without water for several days. Among those affected were a nursing home, the county jail and an apartment complex.

Officials say the city will have to install a new water line and booster pumps to get water from the middle of town to the west side.

City leaders also want to use the funds for other projects including improving storage and pressure in the center water tower, replacing lines and valves where needed, configuring booster pumps on the city’s center side to feed the east side of town during a power outage, moving outside meters inside buildings, replacing damaged or broken fire hydrants and purchasing one or more generators to run the city’s wells during a power outage.

As for the wastewater grant, the city is discussing the purchase of a backup generator to run the city’s wastewater treatment plant during a power outage and possibly a new lab building at the treatment plant.

Officials are not sure when the work on the projects will begin. The city is working with an engineering firm to get the ball rolling.
