UPDATE: Varney Autopsy Indicates Prior Heart Condition

An autopsy on a 17 year old basketball player from Spokane, who died after an early morning practice this week, indicates he had a previously unknown heart condition.

The Christian County Sheriff’s Department issued a news release saying unless a toxicology report contradicted the preliminary finding, the investigation into the death of Forrest Varney is over. It could be several weeks before those results are back.

The autopsy was performed by the Christian County Coroner after Varney collapsed and died Wednesday morning in the school gymnasium. The school said CPR was administered immediately and an ambulance was called to take the teenager to a Springfield hospital, where doctors unsuccessfully tried to save him.

School officials in Spokane have provided grief counselors for students and staff.
